Interested in becoming a Paramedic but full time university education isn’t for you? If so, the Student Paramedic training programme provides an alternative route for you to gain your dream job.

In 2013, West Midlands Ambulance Service recruited 150 people who commenced on the Student Paramedic training programme. Successful applicants for the post are employed on a 30 month fixed term training contract which is based on an ‘earn and you learn’ scheme. The programme is split into 4 levels which provides the necessary training, education and experience to result in a formal qualification and registration to work as a Paramedic in the UK.

Picture of Angad 'Ungie' Singh Flora who completed the Student Paramedic programmeAngad ‘Ungie’ Singh Flora (pictured right) joined the Trust in 2010 as a Student Paramedic and following completion of his training programme, successfully obtained a post as a Registered Paramedic within the Trust. Ungie is passionate about the Student Paramedic programme and when the opportunity was re-launched in 2013, he assisted the Recruitment Team in promoting the course.

Speaking about his chosen career route, Ungie said “The Student Paramedic training programme enabled me to fulfil my dream of becoming a Paramedic. I couldn’t afford to go to university so this option allowed me to learn brand new skills as well as earning a wage. I really feel as if I can now make a huge difference to my community. The support that I received from both the ambulance service and the university was fantastic!”

As a Trust we strive to have a well trained work force, equipped with the right technology to ensure the highest quality service is provided to our patients. The Student Paramedic programme is open to anyone* who wants to make a difference to the communities we serve.

Louise Harris, Recruitment Advisor states that the vacancy is always popular, “we received over 1000 applications for the programme last year which was phenomenal. Everyone involved in the programme are very proud that so many people not only want to join our Trust but also aspire to become Paramedics of the future.

“We are keen to receive applications from individuals who are passionate about patient care and particularly people from a variety of backgrounds. Having staff with a range of experience and knowledge from their own cultures and upbringings is essential to ensure that the Trust reflects the communities that we serve”
