Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Our aim is to bring equality and diversity to the heart of the organisation; through our patients, volunteers, staff, public members, governors and local interest groups. Equality and diversity is built into everything that we do from our policies, practices and strategies, to public engagement and consultation events where we ask our local communities how we can improve our services and practices.

Diversity in employment produces a workforce sensitive to the different needs of the community that we serve. Diversity in delivering our services recognises that the highest quality of care – and equity of access – is built upon an understanding of differing needs. We have therefore developed a vision for ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion in both employment and service delivery.

The Trust has collected equality data and information, which will help us to identify any key equality issues:

  • Understanding the impact of our policies, practices and decisions on people with different protected characteristics, and thereby plan them more effective
  • Assess and eliminate any discrimination both in employment and service delivery
  • Identify the key equality issues for our organization
  • Benchmark our workforce profile against other Ambulance Services nationally

Equality Delivery System (EDS):

The Trust fully endorses the Equality Delivery System (EDS), which is an NHS Equality and Diversity framework to support Trusts to deliver better health outcomes. By using the EDS framework, we have been able to identify and consider further steps which will meet the needs of our staff and service users who share the relevant protected characteristic groups.

Through the Equality Data Analysis report published 31st January 2012 and the collation of the EDS data, the Trust has identified further actions that are needed to eliminate discrimination and harassment, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations. The analysis will also help to improve the way we make informed decisions about our policies and practices, and will be based on evidence and the impact of our activities on equality.

We will take effective action to achieve our ambitions in becoming an exemplar organisation in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
