Disability Discrimination Act 2005
The DDA is a watershed in extending the rights of and protection
for disabled employees and extended the protection of employees
from harassment and victimisation. There is now a duty on public
authorities to produce and implement a Disability Equality Scheme
which will ensure that the organisation’s functions and activities
lead to real outcomes and practical improvements in the day-to day
life and experience of disabled people. This will include:
- Promoting equality of opportunity
- Eliminating discrimination and
disability-related harassment
- Promoting positive attitudes towards
disabled people
- Encouraging participation by disabled
people in public life
- Taking account of a disabled person’s
disabilities, even where that involves treating them more
favourably than others
The Trust has developed a draft working policy which will cover
the new Region and is based on the responsibilities above.
