Paediatric Basic Life Support

Thankfully sudden cardiac
arrest in paediatrics is very rare. However, Health Care
Professionals who come into regular contact with children, and
those who have a duty of care to children recognise the need to
familiarise themselves with the techniques required.
The Resuscitation Council (UK) acknowledges the fact that
children often do not receive resuscitation because potential
rescuers fear causing harm. This fear is unfounded.

- Statistics regarding paediatric mortality
- The anatomy ofn an infant/child
- Aetiology of cardiac arrest in paediatrics
- Basic Life Support - theory
- Basic life support - practical session
- Foreign body airway obstruction
- Recovery position
- Overview
At the end of the course, the student will be able
to:-
- Act safely, promptly and
effectively
- Make a diagnosis of cardiac
arrest
- Perform chest compressions in
accordance to current procedure
- Perform rescue breaths in accordance
to current procedure
- Respond to the needs of the casualty
in cardiac arrest
- Recognise foreign body airway
obstruction
- Perform techniques to relieve foreign
body airway obstruction
- Perform the recovery position
