Community First Responders
A Community First Responder scheme is made up of volunteers who within the community they live are trained to attend emergency calls on behalf of the ambulance service, provide awareness and training to the community in Basic Life Support and the use of a defibrillator.
West Midlands Ambulance Service has Community First Responders in Arden, Solihull, Birmingham, Black Country, Hereford, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Staffordshire and we are looking to increase our numbers.
Community First Responders provide first aid until the arrival of an NHS resource; they are always backed up by ambulance staff. The role is highly rewarding and offers opportunities to meet new people and learn valuable lifesaving skills through the free training provided by WMAS.
Once qualified, volunteers will be affiliated with their local group and will be expected to give a minimum of twenty hours per month. Mandatory refresher training is provided annually and is delivered locally.
Applicants will have a good all-round education, a good level of fitness so that you can carry out cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and a full UK driving license held for at least one year, with no more than 3 current penalty points. Applicants should also have good communication skills and a willingness to learn and help others.
