The first cohort of student paramedics to complete an entirely internally delivered degree programme at West Midlands Ambulance Service has successfully finished their studies, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Trust’s future workforce.
This Paramedic Degree, validated by the HCPC, is the first amongst ambulance services and, delivered in partnership with the University of Derby, it has enabled students to undertake all of their education and training within WMAS, rather than attending university separately for parts of the Student Paramedic journey.
The students, who will formally graduate at a ceremony at the University in July, are the first internally trained degree-based paramedics at WMAS.
The programme, which has been completed at the National Training Academy in Sandwell, combines academic learning with frontline operational experience, allowing students to benefit from consistent teaching, support and mentorship throughout their training. By learning with the same tutors for the duration of the journey, students have been able to build strong professional relationships and receive specialist support, together with a learning experience directly linked to operational practice within the ambulance service.
In addition, the degree-programme has strengthened the connection between classroom learning and real-world patient care, helping students develop confidence, clinical competence and familiarity with the organisation from the very beginning of their careers.
As with previous student paramedic pathways, graduates have secured employment with WMAS as qualified paramedics.
WMAS Education & Training Manager, Kieran Kennedy, said: “We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our first cohort of internally trained student paramedics. This programme represents a significant step forward in how we educate and support our future workforce.
“The success of this first cohort demonstrates the strength of the programme and reflects the dedication shown by both the students and the tutors who have supported them throughout their journey. We look forward to seeing them progress into their careers as newly qualified paramedics serving communities across the West Midlands.”
