Think you or a family member need medical help right now? Use NHS 111 Online or call 111 for advice on what to do next. When it’s not a life-threatening emergency, but you need medical help and don’t know what to do, NHS 111 Online is the right place to go. Your local pharmacist or your doctor can also provide advice when it’s not an emergency.
You should only call 999 or attend an Emergency Department (A&E) in a life-threatening emergency when a patient has a serious injury, severe Illness or in a medical emergency.
Calling 999 for the ambulance service doesn’t automatically mean you need an ambulance. Around 20% of patients are helped by our Clinical Validation Team of paramedics and nurses who give advice over the phone or are able to direct patients to alternative care pathways, ensuring patients are given the right help, at the right time and in the right place. Surprisingly, many people still think ambulance services only take patients to hospital when in fact, less than half go to an emergency department. The rest are either treated at the scene, given advice over the phone or taken to another service such as a GP or minor injuries unit. You won’t be seen quicker in A&E if you arrive by ambulance. The most serious patients will always be prioritised first by A&E staff, whether you’re a walk-in or an ambulance patient.
