When our staff, students or volunteers have concerns, need advice or information, or feel alone with a problem and don’t know what to do or where to turn, SALS is there to help.
There are 55 trained SALS advisors on the team and based across the West Midlands region. In 2023-2024 SALS provided help to 762 staff; averaging 63 a month.
Our SALS trained peer advisors listen to concerns, provide emotional support and encouragement during difficult times and help people to identify the information, support providers and workplace policies relevant to an individual situation. This confidential service is available to all members of the WMAS workforce, including students and our volunteers.
Emergency Operations Centre Call Assessor Supervisor, Abigail Smith, is one of the Trust’s SALS Advisors and has been in this volunteering role for three years. Abigail said:
I am passionate about supporting our dedicated staff who work tirelessly in such a challenging environment. I believe in the importance of encouraging a healthy and positive workforce where everyone feels valued and heard.
“I wanted the opportunity to be able to actively listen, offer guidance, and encourage my colleagues to be their best within their demanding roles. In my experience as a call handler and supervisor, I know how important it is to take care of yourself and your wellbeing so that you are able to provide the best care to our patients.”
